A caring organization

Optimists are committed to programs that have a positive impact on the lives of today’s youth, so that they will have a positive impact on tomorrow’s world.  We do small things, like helping small cancer patients enjoy Easter, and donating turkeys for the City’s Merrymakers Thanksgiving …

We do larger things, like donating bicycles to needy kids.  About 100 bikes a year improve kids’ self esteem, and in many cases, provide families with their only transportation.

We sponsor character-building events such as Oratorical contests. And to extend our reach, we partner with organizations like Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Roadrunner Food Bank, the YMCA’s Camp Shaver, and the public schools. Our adopt-a-school partner is Grant Mid School.

A practical organization

Some of this work involves our time and labor, so the larger the membership, the more we can accomplish. At the same time, all of these activities cost money. So we have fundraisers.

Of course, there’s the familiar Christmas tree lot, but we also usher athletic events, sell tickets at the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair, and help with parking and admission at the Balloon Fiesta.
